Ok, so I have been so busy, that my blog has been a tad neglected for a short while. But I am working on catching up…I promise. The fist bit of information I have to share is quite exciting and I have waited to tell everyone, because I still felt like it wasn’t real, these sorts of things just don’t happen to me. One night some weeks ago, I was going through my inbox purging emails that I didn’t need to keep. I came across one from Kevin Kubota and his bootcamp for digital photography. I had read about the bootcamp some time back and put it as a goal on my calender to attend in October 2007. The tuition was up there and I knew it was something I would have to save for. Well, unfortunately a lot of things have happened this year that have set me back in the finance department just a tad and I knew that attending the bootcamp wouldn’t be possible. Then I read the email, it said that they had a scholarship program and that one lucky winner would have an all inclusive paid bootcamp- so the lodging, the meals and the bootcamp were all going to be paid for. The winner would just have to get themselves there. So, it was 11:30 pm and the deadline for the application was the next day. I thought -hey why not, I had to write a brief essay and submit 20 images to be considered for the scholarship. So I started writing and choosing my 20 images. I sent it off at like 2 am. Went to bed and kind of forgot about it. Well, the day came that they were going to announce the winner and I got an email stating they needed one more day because they had so many applicants and they were having a hard time choosing. In my mind, I thought, with that many people applying, I certainly am not going to be the winner (which in the back of my mind, I started justifying that it was ok because I have such a busy month in October- I would be overwhelmed!) Well, the next day I get an email that says, “Bad News…good news…better news” Inside I found the words that I had not been chosen as the sole scholarship winner, but that they had something great in store for me. Of course I am thinking, well they are probably offering $500 off the tuition price or something. But as I read the entire email I was SO surprised and excited to find that the selection process was so difficult for them that they picked the top 20 people to give scholarships to, and I was one of them. On top of that, they were going to create and dedicate an entirely new bootcamp just for us scholarship winners! I had to re-read and read again to make sure I wasn’t misunderstanding something. But I wasn’t, I actually won a scholarship to Kevin’s bootcamp in Bend Oregon in December (my crazy mad rush will just be ending). To make the prize even better, we are having two guest speakers: Doug Gordon and Craig Strong. Plus they say that there are lots of surprises in store for us. Just last week, my first surprise was a free lensbaby 2.0. I am so excited to try this thing out!
I feel really blessed to be given such a great opportunity, and I only wish my brother (also a photographer) could get in on the goods too! He has done so much service to each of us as he has served several times over in Iraq and other places as a member of the US AirForce. If I could give up my spot in the bootcamp and give it to him, I would (not that I am not excited or grateful, but becasue I know what it would mean to him.)
I will keep you posted about the fun to come, but in the meanwhile you can check out Kevin’s Bootcamp site to learn more
